Chinese men in the eyes of foreign women. After drifting around Africa for two years, he heard that lots of Americans hit the jackpot in China so he went to Shanghai. No doubt Duo was on his way to his job at the dive bar a few blocks from their apartment where he tended bar a few nights a week. Writer Lavina Melwani described a happy marriage which had been arranged by the bride’s father, and noted that during the engagement, the woman was allowed to go out with him before they were married on only one occasion; the couple married and found happiness.
Duo arriving and sitting while Peacecraft drew him, painted him, moved him about like a marionette, touching his body with a careless familiarity that both inflamed Duo and made him feel worthless. Then suddenly on day a whole heap of inquiries are sent to him, which of course takes him by surprise.

You gather together to give a full accounting of your performance during the year to a small group of people, many of whom you rarely meet. Then, everyone publicly discusses and implicitly takes a vote on some very personal issues — your career, body type, love life, fertility and family-planning. Somehow, a roundtable of well-meaning relatives and open-faced pineapple tarts has never struck me as quite the place to discuss these difficult and sometimes painful topics.
Indeed, many of our elders seem to have already made up their minds that no single person can ever be happy, no happily dating couple should wait longer to get married and no married couple should delay procreation. If, like me, you are inclined to disagree, just keep calm and remember that Chinese New Year is a special ceasefire period when disagreements are frowned upon. What you are looking at could also be a long, few days of tactical manoeuvres and passive-aggressiveness requiring patience and fortitude.

There was giggling and banter among the students, but that was all part of the course material as their teacher, Suki Tong, led them into the basics of dating, falling in love and staying together. The course, which is in its second year at two polytechnic institutes, is the latest of many, mostly futile, campaigns by the government to get its citizens to mate and multiply.
Its popularity last year has led to talk of expansion through the higher education system. The courses are an extension of government matchmaking programs that try to address the twin challenges embodied in a falling birthrate: Too few people are having babies and too few of those who are belong to what Singapore considers the genetically desirable educated elite. Mr Lee, who was 91, led Singapore’s transformation from a small port city to one of the wealthiest nations in the world. World leaders have paid tribute to Mr Lee, who served as the city-state’s prime minister for 31 years.
US President Barack Obama described him as a “giant of history” whose advice had been sought by other world leaders. Chinese President Xi Jinping said Mr Lee was a widely respected strategist and statesman, and Russian President Vladimir Putin described him as one of the “patriarchs” of world politics. The period of national mourning will culminate in a state funeral next Sunday and Mr Lee’s body is to lie in state at parliament from Wednesday to Saturday.
News of Mr Lee’s death came in a government statement that said he had “passed away peacefully” in the early hours of Monday at Singapore General Hospital. Mr Lee had been in hospital for several weeks with pneumonia and was on life support. As evening fell, many Singaporeans were continuing to arrive at the Istana, the compound housing the president’s official residence and the prime minister’s office, where a book of condolence has been placed.

In a typical American classroom, there are nearly as many diagnosable cases of ADHD as there are of the common cold. In , researchers from the Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University found that almost 10 percent of children use cold remedies at any given time. The rising number of ADHD cases over the past four decades is staggering. One eye-opening study showed that ADHD medications were being administered to as many as 17 percent of males in two school districts in southeastern Virginia in With numbers like these, we have to wonder if aspects of the disorder parallel childhood itself.

Prime Minister Lee told his audience at a recent rally that despite the uproar over the Great Marriage Debate in , his policies are working: He is finding husbands for women university graduates and, he says, assuring Singapore of more and better babies. Every year that passes by is a year lost. What concerns the prime minister is not only a declining birth rate in affluent Singapore, but, frankly, the quality of the breeding.
I n his new book Blueprint , the psychologist Robert Plomin explains that it is now possible from our individual genome data to make a meaningful prediction about our IQ. When I discussed the topic with Plomin last month, we agreed on the need for urgent discussion of the implications, before genetic selection of embryos for intelligence hits the market. A company called Genomic Prediction, based in New Jersey, has announced that it will offer that service.
The development must be set, too, against what is already possible and permitted in IVF embryo screening. It has been enabled by rapid advances in genome-sequencing technology, making the process fast and relatively cheap. PGD for other purposes is illegal.

Updates on my research and expository papers, discussion of open problems, and other maths-related topics. By Terence Tao. Better beware of notions like genius and inspiration; they are a sort of magic wand and should be used sparingly by anybody who wants to see things clearly. The answer is an emphatic NO. And yes, a reasonable amount of intelligence, patience , and maturity is also required. The popular image of the lone and possibly slightly mad genius — who ignores the literature and other conventional wisdom and manages by some inexplicable inspiration enhanced, perhaps, with a liberal dash of suffering to come up with a breathtakingly original solution to a problem that confounded all the experts — is a charming and romantic image, but also a wildly inaccurate one, at least in the world of modern mathematics.
We do have spectacular, deep and remarkable results and insights in this subject, of course, but they are the hard-won and cumulative achievement of years, decades, or even centuries of steady work and progress of many good and great mathematicians; the advance from one stage of understanding to the next can be highly non-trivial, and sometimes rather unexpected, but still builds upon the foundation of earlier work rather than starting totally anew.
If someone affects to do so, I advise you to be very sceptical of their claims. Of course, even if one dismisses the notion of genius, it is still the case that at any given point in time, some mathematicians are faster, more experienced, more knowledgeable, more efficient, more careful, or more creative than others. As long as you have education, interest , and a reasonable amount of talent, there will be some part of mathematics where you can make a solid and useful contribution.
It might not be the most glamorous part of mathematics , but actually this tends to be a healthy thing; in many cases the mundane nuts-and-bolts of a subject turn out to actually be more important than any fancy applications. Also, if one is accustomed to easy success, one may not develop the patience necessary to deal with truly difficult problems see also this talk by Peter Norvig for an analogous phenomenon in software engineering. Talent is important, of course; but how one develops and nurtures it is even more so.
For these tasks, mathematics needs all the good people it can get.

While the specific details of the Intel complaint are confidential due to a substantial amount of highly confidential business information, the filing asserts that the KFTC has made substantial factual and legal errors in formulating its final written opinion. Furthermore, Intel has expressed concern that the KFTC failed to understand the dynamics, pricing and competition in the microprocessor market.
Intel also believes that the KFTC has misinterpreted or chose to ignore large amounts of economic evidence and analysis demonstrating the ultimate benefit to consumers from the reduced prices and increased performance of Intel’s microprocessors. Proceeding directly to a formal complaint will permit a court to review the case in its entirety and reach an independent decision. Through this process, Intel believes that it will be able to demonstrate that its business practices are both fair and lawful.
