The fitness consequences of mate choice are a source of ongoing debate in evolutionary biology. Recent theory predicts that indirect benefits of female choice due to offspring inheriting superior genes are likely to be negated when there are direct costs associated with choice, including any costs of mating with attractive males. To estimate the fitness consequences of mating with males of varying attractiveness, we housed female house crickets, Acheta domesticus , with either attractive or unattractive males and measured a variety of direct and indirect fitness components. These fitness components were combined to give relative estimates of the number of grandchildren produced and the intrinsic rate of increase relative net fitness. We found that females mated to attractive males incur a substantial survival cost. However, these costs are cancelled out and may be outweighed by the benefits of having offspring with elevated fitness. This benefit is due predominantly, but not exclusively, to the effect of an increase in sons’ attractiveness. Our results suggest that the direct costs that females experience when mating with attractive males can be outweighed by indirect benefits. They also reveal the value of estimating the net fitness consequences of a mating strategy by including measures of offspring quality in estimates of fitness.

One of the greatest — and subtlest — challenges in global business is managing differences in communication style. Imagine the following situation. Peter, an American manager, is organising the installation of innovative design software for a Japanese marketing company. Peter works on a brief and estimates the final date of installation to be in 30 days. He communicates this to the Japanese company, and they respond by thanking him profusely for selecting the date and mention how eager they are to get the installation in place.

However, the next day, Peter is surprised to find a frantic call from his boss about how upset the Japanese company is about the installation date, and the need for it to be a lot sooner, otherwise they will lose a lot of potential clients.

To express or state indirectly: She hinted that she might prefer our company to theirs. See Synonyms at suggest. 2. To indicate or make evident in an indirect.

Estimation of delay to diagnosis and incidence in HIV using indirect evidence of infection dates

It may come as a surprise, but these terms have roots dating back to during the Industrial Revolution, when cost accounting was first introduced to calculate the cost of a product in order to calculate the price based upon the desired profit. Due to the complexities of running a large-scale business, cost accounting was born.

In order to understand the difference between direct and indirect costs, we need to understand the basics. Cost accounting breaks down costs into three basic elements: raw material, manual labor, and overhead. Overhead is always an indirect cost and is further divided into variable and fixed costs. Direct costs are always a variable cost and are calculated as a multiple of the units produced to sell.

For those researchers working in the field of human history, the chronology of events remains a major element of reflection. Archaeologists have access to various techniques for dating archaeological sites or the objects found on those sites. There are two main categories of dating methods in archaeology : indirect or relative dating and absolute dating.

Relative dating includes methods that rely on the analysis of comparative data or the context eg, geological, regional, cultural in which the object one wishes to date is found. This approach helps to order events chronologically but it does not provide the absolute age of an object expressed in years. Relative dating includes different techniques, but the most commonly used are soil stratigraphy analysis and typology.

On the other hand, absolute dating includes all methods that provide figures about the real estimated age of archaeological objects or occupations. These methods usually analyze physicochemical transformation phenomena whose rate are known or can be estimated relatively well. This is the only type of techniques that can help clarifying the actual age of an object. Absolute dating methods mainly include radiocarbon dating, dendrochronology and thermoluminescence.

Data from a national seroconverter cohort with infection date known to within ± 6 The term ‘seroconversion’ describes the appearance of HIV.

Metrics details. Minimisation of the delay to diagnosis is critical to achieving optimal outcomes for HIV patients and to limiting the potential for further onward infections. However, investigation of diagnosis delay is hampered by the fact that in most newly diagnosed patients the exact timing of infection cannot be determined and so inferences must be drawn from biomarker data. We develop a Bayesian statistical model to evaluate delay-to-diagnosis distributions in HIV patients without known infection date, based on viral sequence genetic diversity and longitudinal viral load and CD4 count data.

The delay to diagnosis is treated as a random variable for each patient and their biomarker data are modelled relative to the true time elapsed since infection, with this dependence used to obtain a posterior distribution for the delay to diagnosis. An exponential survival model is implemented that allows general inferences regarding diagnosis delay and pooling of information across groups of patients.

If diagnoses are only observed within a given window period, then it is necessary to also model incidence as a function of time; we suggest a pragmatic approach to this problem when dealing with data from an established epidemic. The model developed is used to investigate delay-to-diagnosis distributions in men who have sex with men diagnosed with HIV in London in the period — with unknown date of infection. Cross-validation and simulation analyses indicate that the models developed provide more accurate information regarding the timing of infection than does CD4 count-based estimation.

Delay-to-diagnosis distributions were estimated in the London cohort, and substantial differences were observed according to ethnicity. The combination of all available biomarker data with pooled estimation of the distribution of diagnosis-delays allows for more precise prediction of the true timing of infection in individual patients, and the models developed also provide useful population-level information.

Characterization is the act of creating and describing characters in literature. The way that characters act, think, and speak also adds to their characterization. There are two subsets of the definition of characterization: direct and indirect characterization. We explore this distinction in more depth below. Direct characterization, also known as explicit characterization, consists of the author telling the audience what a character is like. A narrator may give this information, or a character in the story may do it.

Examples of direct characterization would be:. This requires the audience to make inferences about why a character would say or do those things.

Abstract The complex geologic development of the Sigsbee Escarpment in the Southern Green Canyon area has been studied in great det ail using a comprehensive suite of geophysical and geotechnical data.

Integration of these data led to the recognition of certain geologic indicators that assist, either directly, or indirectly, in “filling the gaps” in the geologic history of the Atlantis area. These indicators include: 1 the Law of Superposition , 2 regional stratigraphic markers, 3 sedimentation rates, 4 seafloor current processes, and 5 fault offsets. These indicators provide both relative and absolute timing constraints on the occurrence and level of activity of various geologic depositional and erosional processes in the Atlantis prospect area.

This Directive establishes the proper methods of assigning indirect costs. These costs are usually classified and accumulated in the following indirect cost categories:.

FERPA regulations define attendance to include, but not be limited to: (a) indirect identifiers, such as a student’s date of birth, or other information which can be.

Relative dating is the science of determining the relative order of past events i. In geology, rock or superficial deposits , fossils and lithologies can be used to correlate one stratigraphic column with another. Prior to the discovery of radiometric dating in the early 20th century, which provided a means of absolute dating , archaeologists and geologists used relative dating to determine ages of materials.

Though relative dating can only determine the sequential order in which a series of events occurred, not when they occurred, it remains a useful technique. Relative dating by biostratigraphy is the preferred method in paleontology and is, in some respects, more accurate. The regular order of the occurrence of fossils in rock layers was discovered around by William Smith. While digging the Somerset Coal Canal in southwest England, he found that fossils were always in the same order in the rock layers.

As he continued his job as a surveyor , he found the same patterns across England. He also found that certain animals were in only certain layers and that they were in the same layers all across England.
